Recap: The Stadium Bookmakers Autumn Puppy Cup heats
Nottingham hosted two heats of The Stadium Bookmakers Autumn Puppy Cup at Nottingham on Monday night. The top three dogs from each race earned spots in the £500 final which will be run on 25 October.
The Stadium Bookmakers Autumn Puppy Cup - Heat 1
The first heat was won by Fire Foods Nitro, who finished 2¾ lengths ahead of Storming Hawk with a time of 30.55 seconds. Nitro needed a late burst to move into the lead after trailing Peacocks Pride for the majority of the race. Pride lost the lead to Nitro
on the fourth bend, and slipped to third place. Second went to Storming Hawk.
Nitro, Hawk, and Pride will all participate in the final next Monday.
Isabellas Meako finished in fourth place, and the 9-4 race favourite, Fabulous Promise took fifth. Promise was expected to at least reach the final race, but a difficult first bend put her out of contention early. Last place went to Cash Register.
The Stadium Bookmakers Autumn Puppy Cup - Heat 2
Rebellious Queen won the second Puppy Cup heat by 1¾ lengths over 7-1 longshot, Droopys Safari, with a time of 30.60. Queen saw odds of 11-8, but it was Romeo Daddy Cool that entered the heat as the even odds favourite. Cool got off to a great start and
led the race after the first bend, but Queen came on strong late, and passed Cool on the fourth bend.
Cool managed to hang on to third place to earn a spot in Monday’s final. He finished seven lengths back of Queen, and the late slow down will have many punters hesitant to put money on him in the final.
Queen, Safari, and Cool all earned spots in the final.
Foxes City finished in fourth place after a terrible start, and Bakari took fifth after he stumbled on the third bend. In last place was Looney Time.
The Stadium Bookmakers Standard Trophy
Also on the Nottingham card was The Stadium Bookmakers Standard Trophy, featuring a group of strong racers, for the most part. Chicago Prince, an East Anglain Derby finalist won the 500m race with an impressive time of 29.94.
Prince and Movealong Vieri were neck-and-neck from the first bend to the third when Vieri started to slow down. Prince didn’t let up, and won the race by 5½ lengths over Vieri. Salacres Optimum, a 33-1 long-shot, found a way to take third place, making some
punters happy.
In fourth was Elwick Archer, and in fifth was Little Gaffer. Last place went to Zack Zolton.
