Recap of 2010 Boys Youth African Championship: Tunisia achieved another landmark by securing gold-medal
The five-nation event of 2010 Boys Youth African Championship created an excellent opportunity for African Nations to bring out their best volleyball talent and prove their skills on the court. South Africa became the host of this exciting campaign, which
continued from 13-18 September, 2010. Teams from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria reached the beautiful city of Cape Town in order to participate in the tournament. South Africa also played in the tournament with its National Boys’ team.
Tunisia entered the tournament with the tag of defending champion, while Egypt looked in tremendous form. Algeria had the confidence of bronze medal victory in 2008 Boys African Championship and Morocco had some sharp studs in the team. South Africa was
obviously equipped with massive emotional support of fans and got the competitive edge of home-courts. All five teams brought their own unique features in the game and made it a happening event.
Nonetheless, Tunisia started the campaign on a very good note and kept the title under their built for another year. They successfully secured the top-spot and also earned the World Championship Ticket. Tunisia got the hold of title-trophy one day before
the final day, as they exhibited an explosive performance and pulled off successes in consecutive four matches. They clean-swept the opponent in first three matches and grabbed 3-2 victory in the fourth match to seize the gold-ware.
Match 1- Tunisia vs. Algeria 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, and 25-7)
Tunisia played the first match on Monday, 13th September, 2010 against Algeria. The defending champion Tunisia was too strong for Algerian team and snatched victory from them in three straight sets. It was not only a good start for the Tunisian
team but it was a clear message for other teams in the squad that defending champion was totally shaped up to secure the title. It was a kind of timely reminder for other teams to get their horses ready for run.
Match 2- Tunisia vs. South Africa 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, and 25-17)
After capturing victory in first match, the team moved forward and battled with host South Africa on Tuesday, 14th September, 2010. It was a big bruising encounter for South African team, as Tunisian hot-shots didn’t let them raise their heads.
Tunisian hitters converted every opportunity in their favour and influenced South African team from all sides. The host team collapsed in front of local fans in three straight sets. The confident Tunisian team didn’t take any pressure from the cheering crowd,
which supported the home team and banged on loud drums.
Match 3- Tunisia vs. Egypt 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, and 25-23)
In the third match on Wednesday, 15th September, 2010 Egypt challenged Tunisia for a hard knock. Egypt was considered as the arch rival for Tunisian team, and it was likely to create a problem. Tunisian team was aware of Egyptian team’s calibre
and formulated the right strategy for them. They continued with success and extended their winning streak with another victory against Egypt. Tunisia won the match by repeating the same result of 3-0.
Match 4- Tunisia vs. Morocco 3-2 (25-13, 24-26, 25-21, 15-25, and 15-10)
Tunisia faced a bit of resistance from Morocco in the fourth match. The defending champion managed to capture the first set with good margin of 12 points. Nonetheless, the next set belonged to Moroccan team, as they were able to level the score at 1-1. Tunisia
broke the tie in third set but Morocco was quick to build it again in 4th set. The situation became quite dramatic for Tunisian team. Finally the tussle was settled with Tunisia’s golden-set victory.
Tunisia climbed up the top-spot in rankings of 2010 Boys Youth Championship and collected the title trophy for most wins in the tournament.
