Recap of Unique Women’s Volleyball Cup in Peru
The upcoming event of FIVB Women’s World Championship is the major attraction for women-volleyball teams in all five federations. The FIVB Championship is going to hit the town at the end of this month. The event will be kicked off on October 29th
in Japan and action will be continued till 14th November, 2010. At this time, there has been a lot of activity going on in all clubs. The friendly practice matches are the best way to test team skills and polish players’ abilities.
In this regard, Peru hosted Unique Women’s Cup last week. The teams from Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago participated in the activity along with host Peruvian team. The teams were gathered in the city of Lima, Peru and contested their
power against each other. The Dominican Republic’s team appeared on the scene as the topper of the tournament and took away the gold-medal.
Gold-medal Match (Dominican Republic vs. Peru)
The final showdown of the 1st Unique Women’s Cup held on 10th October, 2010. Teams from Dominican Republic and Peru approached the Eduardo Dibos Coliseum and took their positions on two sides of the court. The Dominican Republic’s team
performed better and thrashed 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-23, and 25-17) victory over home-team Peru in front of more than 6,000 fans.
The Dominican Republic opened the match with good serves and remained consistent in hitting the ball with full power. Altagracia Mambru of Dominican Republic (DR) hit excellent shots and contributed early points in team’s score. The DR side easily found
the flow and dominated host-team with delivery of authentic spikes. Peru was equipped with strong players who displayed good effort to block the speedy aces of Dominican Republic. They tried hard but couldn’t catch up with the clever Dominican Republic players.
Team DR stretched the score to match point and ended the first set by sending 25-19 over Peru.
The Dominican Republic had good positive energy since the start of match, but Peruvian ladies also got better in second set. They overcame the mistakes, which they committed in first set, and followed a different strategy. They spotted gaps in Dominican
Republic’s side and directed the ball with precision. The prolific show of Peruvian squad brought success for the team in second set. On the other hand, the Dominican Republic was oddly stuck in long rallies and failed to put up with killing spikes of Jessenia
Uceda. DR side struggled to raise head but Peruvians subdued their effort with commanding shots. Peru recovered from the shock of defeat in first set and reversed the score to Dominican Republic. The hosts claimed second-set victory at 25-22 and levelled the
score.
Third set of the match was a bruising encounter as both teams started deadly attacks. Lisvel Eve of Dominican Republic contributed important points by hitting convincing spikes. Likewise, Peru was full of vigour after winning the second set and they kept
on hitting the ball in targeted areas. The score soared up with a close gap of points and see-saw battle continued on. The match-point was near and Dominican Republic got a perfect kill to pull off victory in third set. They won the set at 25-23, after a close
fight.
The game entered fourth set and potential risk of loss lingered on home-team. The Dominican ladies attacked with full might and devastated Peruvian court. They added quick points in their score and declared match victory by winning third set (25-17).
The Dominican Republic celebrated victory over Peru and got their hands on the gold-ware in the Unique Women’s Volleyball Cup.
Bronze Medal Match (Puerto Rico vs. Trinidad & Tobago)
Teams from Puerto Rico and Trinidad & Tobago battled-out third-place match on the same day. Puerto Rico easily managed to dismiss Islanders in straight sets and captured the third position. Trinidad and Tobago received 0-3 (10-25, 15-25, and 12-25) defeat
and settled for fourth spot in the tournament, while victorious team seized the bronze-medal.
