Recap of the MEVZA Youth volleyball championship in Maribor
The Middle European Volleyball Zonal Association (MEVZA) organised the 2011 Boys’ Youth Volleyball Championship in Maribor, Slovenia.
The three-day tournament completed its run from  December 28 to 30, while under-16 boys’ teams from Slovakia, the host Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia and Austria came into stride. Czech Republic entered the competition with tag of defending
champion, while Slovakia was runner-up last year.
On the opening day of the tournament, each team played two matches. In the first match on Wednesday, December 28, Croatian boys went against Team Austria. The match spanned over three sets, while Croatia earned winning status by posting 2-1 (25-21, 25-22,
19-25) victory. Likewise, the defending champions Czech Republicans did the same to Hungry in the next fixture. They clinched success by sending 2-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-21) on board. The host team from Slovenia contested its game skills with Slovakian counterparts
in third match. The visiting Slovakia proved to be better and won the match (25-20, 25-21, 14-25).
Slovak team continued with success in the next match and launched authority on the Czech side. They finished the match in three sets and grabbed success. The scoreboard showed the final results of 2-1 (25-19, 25-17, 16-25). In the last two matches of the
day-1, Croatia and Slovenia clean-swept their respective opponents. Croatia posted 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-14) victory over Hungry, while Austria received 0-3 (18-25, 23-25, 17-25) defeat from host Slovenia.
Slovakia remained undefeated on the opening day of the tournament and got hold of the top position, whereas Slovenia occupied the second slot with 2-1 record.
The volleyball action restarted on the second day with early 3-0 victory of Austria over Hungry. It was a total revenge as Hungry had beaten Austria in the previous match on Wednesday. Both matches ended in straight sets but announced different winners.
The home team added one more victory to its count on day-2 when they defeated Czech Republic scoring 25-13, 25-21, and 25-18 in consecutive frames. The top team of the tournament Slovakia breezed past Croatia in the third fixture of the day. They scored 2-1
(25-16, 26-28, 25-18) in three-set play.
Following the loss of first match to Slovenia, the team of Czech Republic bounced back and downed Croatia in the next match. They posted 2-1 (25-18, 25-17, 19-25) victory over Croatia. Like day-1, the second day of the 2011 MEVZA Boys’ Youth Volleyball Championship
rounded off in the same fashion. The last two matches concluded with final result of 3-0, where Hungry and Slovakia fell to Slovenia and Austria, respectively. Last match of the second day was full of ‘hue and cry’ as top team of the tournament Slovakia was
beaten by Austria in straight sets.
Slovenia and Austria came on top at the end of second day of the tournament. The two teams settled for the final match, which was played on Friday, December 30th. Austria managed to overcome the hosts and pull up 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 26-24, 25-22) win in the
final encounter of MEVZA Youth Championship.
