Recap of the fiercest battles of 2012: Djokovic vs. Tsonga – China Open 2012
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, gave a straight-sets defeat, 7-6(4), 6-2, to the Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the China Open held at the hard courts of Beijing. The Serb consolidated his third title at the ATP tournament
and regained his former momentum.
Earlier in the tournament, Djokovic took off at a very decent pace and rallied past all his challengers. He penned down his triumph over the likes of Florian Mayer, Jurgen Melzer and Carlos Berlocq. He consolidated his straight-sets
triumphs against his challengers and was clearly the most dominating contestant amongst all.
The Serb’s victory at the hard courts of Beijing surely proved to be remarkable. He pocketed away $ 530,570 prize money and 500 ATP Ranking points in total, helping him to secure the world number one spot against the Swiss professional,
Roger Federer.
In a post match interview Djokovic told the media, “He’s been playing really well. There's no secrets between each other, between us. I mean, we [have] played many times, played a lot of important matches on the big stage. He's
a very powerful player, big serve, big forehand, and if that works, he can win against anybody on any surface, to be honest. So there is no clear favourite, I think, in tomorrow's match. We have both been winning quite comfortably. It's going to be a good
final hopefully for the tournament. I am planning to come back to the China Open next year.”
The 27-year-old, Tsonga, commenced a decent start and started to take advantage of his earlier serve in the match. The Serbian contender responded and levelled down the score line to 5-all. The tough competition between the two
sides ended the set in a tie-breaker round. Djokovic contested to secure a 3-0 lead and despite of the Frenchman’s struggle, he lost the opener in 65minutes.
In the second set, Djokovic started to again momentum at a very solid pace and made it difficult for his challenger’s to take over. The two contestants played good tennis, marking an emphatic end to the tournament. The duo faced
each other in the quarter-finals of the London 2012 Olympics and the Serb jolted down his straight sets win, 6-1, 7-5 against him.
The two opponents secured exactly same initial serve accuracy of 59 percent. The third seeded, Tsonga, thundered across nine aces, converting 30 of 43 first and 10 of 30 second serve points. On the other hand, the Serbian number
one just clinched 27 of 39 first and 17 of 27 second serve points.
