Recap of women’s Country Quota Playoffs of the 2011 Brasilia Open – USA and Germany
The 2011 Brasilia Open Beach Volleyball Tournament is underway in Brazil. The regular beach volleyball season was opened with the Brasilia Open on Sunday, 17th April. The beautiful capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro welcomed 61 women’s duos from
35 countries of the world. According to the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) rules, the countries having more than one team were supposed to send their teams in the Country Quota Playoffs. Following the set rules, nine duos from Brazil, USA and
Germany appeared in the CQ stage on Sunday.
Three out of six Brazilian duos reserved berths in the Qualification Tournament, while one pair from United States and one from Germany successfully cleared the early stage of Country Quota Playoffs.
Fendrick/Hanson vs. Hocevar/Fopma 2-0 (22-20, 21-17)
The U.S. duo of Fendrick and Hanson had very well prepared for the tough fight with their archrivals. The match was opened with long jump-serves by Hanson. She put away the ball in opponents’ half with great technique, which promptly hit the right spot.
On the other hand, Hacevar resisted to the heavy strike of Fendrick and Hanson. She threw her hands up in the air at almost every other shot. In the meantime, Fopma came strong on the opposite side and added consecutive points. The score soared up with a close
gap of points and there was extremely no telling about the better team then. The point-to-point battle continued, while both sides regularly traded lead. Slowly and steadily, the first set inched its way to the end. Fendrick and Hanson got a perfect kill near
the end of first set and sealed victory by posting 22-20.
After capturing the first set, Fendrick/Hanson became more powerful. They tightened the screws of the opponents and didn’t allow them to raise their heads. The continuous attack attempts by Fendrick worked magic and dragged the duo of Hacevar/Fopma under
pressure. The nervousness of Hacevar/Fopma created more chances for Hanson to hit the ball at great speed. Together with Fendrick, she put up a great effort and pulled off success at 21-17. The American team of Fendrick and Hanson reserved a berth in the Qualification
Tournament on Monday.
Borger/Buthe vs. Huttermann/Schumacher 2-0 (21-11, 21-9)
The duo of Borger/Buthe of Germany appeared in the first Country Quota match against Huttermann and Schumacher. It was a fine display of beach volleyball by spectacular Borger and Buthe. Both players sparked on the scene with their superb hitting. They totally
hindered the performance of opponents and claimed match victory in straight sets.
Borger/Buthe vs. Banck/Gunther 2-0 (21-14, 21-8)
In the second CQ match between German teams, the pairing of Borger and Buthe contested their classical skills with the duo of Banck and Gunter. Borger and Buthe were known for their unstoppable cross court shots. The match was opened by Borger at a high
pace. She supplied plenty of power to her serves and created a great impression on the other team. Likewise, her partner Buthe was equipped with all necessary tips and tricks of the game. Both of them proved to be too heavy for the pairing of Banck and Gunther.
Borger/Buthe managed to take control of operations in early few minutes. They heavily influenced the opponents and jumped on every little opportunity to score points. They easily covered the length of opening set and sent a score of 21-14 on board. The duo
of Banck/Gunther struggled to gain better status but most of their efforts went futile. They failed to put up with the killing spikes and deadly aces of Borger and Buthe. Eventually, Borger/Buthe emerged as the winner of the match. The duo of Borger and Buthe
paved their way to the Qualification Tournament on Monday.
