Question:

Reccomended car for a teen driver?

I have my permit and turn 16 this year so i've been looking around at cars to see what's available.

Some cars I've found and liked are Nissan Altimas/Maximas and a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

But I heard Jeeps were unsafe.. is it just the Liberties that are or the Cherokees too?

The maximum my parents are willing to spend is 6-7 grand.

What kind of things would you reccomend I be looking for?

  1. go for a toyota yaris.

  2. a late model 2 wd jappa will do it everytime ,reliable and comfortable and plenty of power when you need it

    easy on the pocket too

  3. I have had a '99 VW Golf since it was new (I was 18 then)--I drove my parents' cars beforehand. Anyway, the Golf is small, reliable, and gets great gas mileage--not _too_ stylish, but it's got an interesting shape. If you're on the short side (I am 4'10"), it's perfect for that; if you're tall, it might be slightly uncomfortable, though.

It doesn't have power windows or cruise control, mind, but that might lower the price some as well, if you're willing to deal with the lack of both of those. I'd think about what nonessentials you're willing to sacrifice, so that you can get a better car as far as essentials are concerned. Maybe look into a hybrid as well, although a used one might be out of your price range.

  4. pick up the latest consumer reports car edition and read it over with your parents.

i agree that the notion that suvs  are safer is wrong.  last summer someone cut my 19 yr  old son off on 95 and sent him spinning into the guardrail, 15 days after he bought a 5 yr old Jetta. Airbags deployed and the front and back were heavily damaged and he didnt have a scratch on him.  ( the car was totalled ) Cars are built much safer today.

Get a used car with good mileage and real good safety features like airbags , but get it after you have practiced driving for a yr

  5. Why don't you do something for your  planet and get a Scion

something that gets good gas mileage while your driving to you little castle

  6. A TANK, OR none, just buy them video games and any other electronic c**p they need and drop them off here and there and they should be fine... kids and cars are death traps...

sorry but gotta be blunt... kids don't respect driving till at least

19... and that is pushing it...  if there is ice where you live

get 4 wheel drive...  if it's city driving get something that dont look to nice... i.e people open doors into your nice car, or get car jacked... i.e survive a bad accident... I would get something like truck... so you can just drive around you are

1 friend... something with size and something were you can

get some use out of it... check out the http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.c...

if you are not down with the truck do to gas, then a volkswagon may be ok, it's got good crash records and

is ok on gas or better and if you dont mind being a taxi for your budies then it's got 4 door room and I belive some models have 4 wheel drive...but take your time in finding a slightly used one.... I would get new if you can afford it..

well.. that is my thoughts.... good luck and check out the

    volkwagon on the http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.c...

and see how it performed... but dont get nothing to small and make sure you have an air bag... .good luck

    1. never drink and drive

    2. dont talk on your cell phone and drive turn it off get a pager

if you must have 24-7 connection for real

    3. do not stop in hood like areas unless you wana die i.e

nice young rich spoiled  girl in new car not watching her surroundings.... a felons dream

    4. when it's icy out drive safe because the idots wont and watch them... maybe even limit driving in the bad weather I have lost 2 friends to bad driving weather... hard price to pay for needing to be somewhere...

    5. get the best insurance money can buy and cover yourself for the highest amount... it's only a $20 doallar a month diffrence but if you get a head injury from a bad accident or something worse you will blow through the smaller coverages and regret it every day of your life...

  7. I would recommend something old and junky that you won't like all that much.

First cars should suck. Ever since cars have been our primary method of transportation, teens have been initiated into the world of driving via a crappy car. It's just the way things are!

It makes it that much nicer when you can finally afford to buy your own car later on. Plus you'll beat the c**p out of it just by being a teen, and police officers are FAR more likely to bug a teenager in a sweet new car versus a plainer, older one.

  8. I wouldn't recommend something too big - harder to control. Something reliable and economical so it doesn't rack up a huge peterol bill is always good.. But that doesn't mean it has to be boring. A hybrid car would be very coool!

  9. Suv and trucks are NOT safer than cars - because they flip over easy in an accident.

    ===

Cars that start out low-cost are also re-sold low cost.  Honda Civic is one such car.  So even though they may be in great condition, due to low price when they were new, the used Civic also go for low price.

The Civics are very sporty (engine) and great on gas mileage.  My 94 Civic still gets over 41 mpg.

    Good Luck...
