Question:

Receive long-distance calls after canceling long distance service?

Hello,

I'm thinking of canceling the long-distance service (AT&T) on the house land line (we use cell phones for LD). How will that affect our ability to receive incoming long-distance calls?

I guess I don't really have an emotional preference between "Yes, you'll still receive them", and "No, you won't". Since the majority of our incoming calls are unsolicited, canceling the service might have tangible benefits besides saving money.

Thanks!

  1. To have, or not to have, long distance "service" will not effect incoming calls, local or from long distance.  Receiving LD calls is always paid for by the caller, thus doesn't affect your ability to receive the calls.

If you use 1010 dial-around service in your area, you don't need LD service anyway.  And with 1010 dialing you can still make low-cost LD calls without the LD service.

Yak is one such 1010-YAK service.  Their 1010-925 calls are just billed directly through your local phone service without signing up for anything.

  2. I cancelled my long distance a long time ago. I was paying over $4.00 a month for the LD service, even if i made NO CALLS!! You will still receive incoming long distance calls. If I have to call long distance, I use an AT&T calling card from Target, and get charged about 3 cents a minute or less for the calls. Those '1010' numbers have too many hidden fees for me.!!

  3. Your provider should be able to give you this info.
