Question:

Recently, I took my cat to the vet. He has a broken tooth. They quoted me $700 to $900. Is that a too much?

It seemed rather excessive. Even if he needs a few additional extractions, should it really be that much?

  1. is that how much to take the tooth out.... geez...id be ringing around some other vets to see there price

  2. It does sound like a lot, but I guess it depends on what all is involved in having it extracted.

Does it really need to be extracted?

One vet tried to scare me into getting my cat's broken tooth removed and I believed him but still wasn't going to let him remove it since I was new to the area and didn't have that much experience with that vet.  I waited until I was visiting my family with him and took him to their vet to get his teeth cleaned and have the tooth removed.  They would not remove the tooth.  They said they would need to break his jaw to get it out and that would be more risky than leaving it in.  It's been over 6 years since then and my cat is still healthy, even with the broken tooth.  When I adopted a kitten a few years later they recommended a good local vet and said that the one I was using was not good at all (picked based on a friend's recommendation - but a dog owner, no cats).

With any major medical issue, human or pet, always get at least a second opinion.  Ask friends with cats what vet they use and try to get some other opinions and estimates.  Of course cheaper isn't necessarily better, so don't decide based on price alone.

  3. Does sound quite expensive, depends what is involved (anaesthetic, extraction, after care etc)

I would ring round other vets in your area and let them know what your cat needs and check their prices.

In future might be a good idea to insure your cat, I have insurance for my cat Mogsy which covers him getting lost stolen ill injured etc upto £4000 a year vet bills with just a £50 excess. The insurance only costs me £9 per month. Worth it! (So in US dollars about $8000 cover per year with a $100 excess for about $20 a month)

  4. cats, and really all animals are expensive to look after. you should take your cat to a few different vets and ask how much it would be. Then go to the vet that was cheapest. but you should do it quick because your cat might be in pain. good luck!   :-)

  5. yes 900$  is very exspensive for a tooth to be fixed
