I got married in march and took my husband's last name. I've only had my passport for like 13 months do I need to get a new passport before traveling out of the US?

  1. yes, they won't let you out of the US with a passport that doesn't have your name on it.

  2. My wife (of three years) and I travel all over the place. She has not gotten around to changing her passport even though she has changed her license, social security card, mortgage, car insurance and all of that.

As long as you have an official copy of your marriage license handy it is no big deal. People get married all of the time and don't do the whole change of passport thing.

An example but it works the same everywhere. I booked my wife's ticket in my last name flying to England. You get to the counter and have to show passports. We showed the marriage certificate and they just issued boarding passes. With those you just breeze through security.

Same coming back. Now after main security they had an extra level of security at the actual gate itself........ where the randomly check people. My wife got pulled and upon producing a marriage certificate it took all of 1 minute.

You be fine. Not necessary but it would be good to have an extra copy of your marriage certificate packed away. You never know if it might be lost, stolen or damaged. Sure it is a trip to the courthouse but extra copies will come in handy at some point for various things at some point anyway.

Again... you have zero to worry about.

  3. My wife has a passport with her maiden name in it and will have one for the rest of her life! (Her country does not allow name changes). Never had a problem. To make things more interesting: American passport = married name. <country of origin> passport = maiden name Still no problem. You can bring along you marriage certificate if you like...

  4. If you change your name, you need to change driver license and passport and tell IRS next time you file taxes.

  5. You can still use your passport with your maiden name. But your airline ticket should also be in your maiden name.Since your greencard is in  your married name, you can show the Immigration your marriage certificate to show the transition from your maiden name to married name.It is best though to have your passport amended to your married name to avoid further hassles in your overseas trips.
