  1. I think you must be referring to "Golden Rice". The special characteristic that it has is high levels of  b-carotene, or the source of vitamin A, which is lacking in other rice varieties.  It also has an increased iron content.  The Vitamin A is critical to poorer families in under developed countries.  The lack of which is the cause of much blindness in children.  Unfortunately the development and distribution of Golden Rice to the people who most need it has been hindered and almost stopped through Greenpeace and others of like mind because Golden Rice was developed by genetic modification, or introduction of genes from another plant.  It seems of no concern that thousands of people are suffering from Vitamin A and iron deficiencies.  Hundreds of children are now blind and this could have been prevented by earlier introduction of Golden Rice.

  2. Here are a number of articles dated April 2007, then August 2006, and May 2007 respectively. Rice is, and should be, one of the most researched food plants world wide. I'm not sure what you are looking for specifically, but nothing world shaking has been found in the study of rice with the possible exception of flood/ storm resistant varieties (holding their grains thru adverse conditions).
