At first I thought his odd behavior was due to the recent earthquake. But now we've discovered it's something a little bit different. *cough* The evidence of his recent maturity has shown up and well, we're at a bit of a loss as to what to do.
He does not come to me anymore. In fact, I have to come to him and when I lean down to pet him, he will start to shake, though his ears will not be down. He comes for my mother and will even l**k her, but seems to dislike me now. He came to me very briefly, allowed me to pet his head for a second, and then left. If I pick him up, he'll struggle about and scratch me. He never used to do this.
He rarely comes out of his cage. Doesn't sniff around at the new items I bring in. (Stuffed toys, chew toys, etc, etc.) Won't even come when I have treats. I shredded some newspaper and put it inside and he seems to like chewing it and throwing it around. Besides that, all he does is hide in the corner or lay down. (He'll flop) Flopping is supposed to be a sign of happiness, right? If he's happy, why does he seem so scared and whacked out?
He used to have a companion rabbit, but she died almost a year ago. He wasn't very affected by the loss so I don't think that it has anything to do with this. But I guess it could.
I've already put a towel up to prevent any damage from possible spraying. We don't have enough money to get him fixed right away as we just got done taking our dog to the vet and that equals a lot of money. What can I do in the meantime and are there any other possible reasons for his behavior?
Last thing: We have three cats in the house and two of them visit him regularly. He isn't territorial with them at all, in fact he will let them groom him. Our crazy one actually visited inside his cage today, and he just laid there (occasionally getting up to sniff her like he always does)
Sometimes I take him outside to run around in the pen and our biggest dog will visit him and he won't be afraid at all. He doesn't run when I try to catch him, but his ears never go down when I approach. The few time she does take food from me, he'll run off with it. Usually he eats it right there.
What is going on with my bun?
