Recently raped and seeking justice

Question

On July 8th I was raped by someone I knew. I went to the hospital so they could do a rape kit but didn't decide to formally go through speaking with the police. I have not slept since that terrible incident. As terrified as I am, I know I deserve justice. How do I "press charges" or what are the appropriate steps to go from here to make sure he pays for his crime? Information is greatly appreciated.
