Recently saw thousands of snails up trees in a small wood some 20 - 25 feet of the ground,any ideas why?

Trees were mixed,mainly beech but some fir trees in North Norfolk

when we lived in Spain you would see thousands of the little sods up the top of telephone poles ! In summer they would bake ! Why? I asked someone that and they didn`t know,but it made them easier to harvest , yuk. I still wonder why.

its part of their mating ritual, snails climb trees, find a partner and then secrete a kind of snotty mucus which they have to hang from while they mate, afterwards they drop from the tree and go on their merry way! its a snail thing!

true the could have been a local flood, or maybe they were feeding on tree sap
