Does anyone know a summarised recipe for artificial colostrum, which would be suitable to feed to orphaned cows? This is for Year 10 homework, so nice and simple please. Thanks

  1. In emergency, colostrum substitutes can be made, but are nutritionally not as good as cow's colostrum and lack the essential immunoglobulins.  A basic recipe for "artificial colostrum" is:

    1 egg beaten

    300 ml water

2 ml (½ teaspoon) castor oil

    600 ml whole milk

Feed this mixture three times per day for the first three days of life.  If the calf has not received any maternal colostrum, it will be much more difficult to rear and will require a high level of care.

  2. i dont know of any artificial colostrum, but we would always take when a newborn was not nuseing we woul feed the calf and then milk out the cow by hand and freeze the colostrum for any calf that we might need it on later
