Describe the translation on the graph of y=1/x to obtain the following (explain how you did it as well)

x+3=y

-----

x+1

I just want to understand what this equation means and how to interpret it.

  1. y = (x + 3) / (x + 1)

    = 1 + 2 / (x + 1)

    y - 1 = 2 / (x + 1).

    That is now in the form:

    Y = 2[ 1 / X ]

    where:

    X = x + 1

    Y = y - 1

    You need to stretch the graph of y = 1 / x vertically by a factor of 2 keeping the origin fixed, and then move the origin to (-1, 1).
