Question:

Recommend a caller ID decryption program?

I need a program I can run on my computer from a modem that can decrypt the calls that show up on CID as unknown or blocked. If there is a way to DIY other than a modem program, I might go for that if it isnt too complicated and won't cost too much. A friend recommended callerID restore but said it almost always gave viruses and when I searched for it I got no results. Not even viruses. This is for a landline, not a cell phone.

  1. You can't.  The information sent by the telco isn't sent encrypted. You can look at the raw data stream and blocked or unknown numbers are set by bits and the number isn't sent at all.  The only thing you could do is set up something that auto answers blocked and unknown calls, asks them to type in their number and then pass that info on to you.  Of course, the phone companies thought this was a good idea themselves so you can subscribe to the same thing -- ACR (anonymous call rejection).  You could also subscribe to ANI which cannot be blocked but it's probably not worth the cost and equipment necessary.
