  1. The all time winner bargain compact digital camera is the Canon 7.1 megapixel PowerShot SD1000 [not the IS] 7.1 with an added 2- gig memory card which when set in the manual mode for "Vivid" colors and videos at 30 fps in 320 dpi format provides killer images and concert videos with great piano sounds. It currently sells for $160 at Sears:

  6. The perfect camera for you would be a Fujifilm S700.

It's very affordable and takes amazing photos!

  7. What would you like to take pictures of?  Or what do you like to look at pictures of?

There are a lot of very good quality compact digital cameras available these days, and all can take fine pictures.

I'd recommend going to a camera store and holding them in your hands, trying them out. Some might have buttons too small for you, for instance.  The big box stores tend to attach ungainly anti-theft devices that weigh more than the camera does; camera stores let you hold the camera just as you feel it at home, without the anti-theft stuff.

You don't specify, but I would certainly get a digital camera, NOT film.  You never need to buy film or pay to develop it.

I'd start with something small enough to carry easily or fit in a pocket - you can't take pictures unless you have the camera with you.

Look for Image Stabilization (or Shake Reduction, or whatever the brand calls it).  It helps keep the picture clear when your hands shake, and small cameras are surprisingly hard to hold steady, especially when looking at the LCD screen on the back instead of looking through a view finder.

Personally, I like Nikon Coolpix cameras, as they are well made and often designed to take good close up pictures (macro is the photography term) of bugs and flowers.  But other brands can take excellent photos and have their own special features - now like face and smile detection.

You can get a quality "point and shoot" digital that will fit in your pocket and take good pictures for well under $200.  Take a couple of thousand pictures and you will know what features are missing that you'll want on your next camera.

For $150 to $200 you should get:

An OPTICAL zoom (not digital zoom)

Shake reduction (whatever the brand calls their version)

An LCD screen big enough for you to see clearly

Whatever features will help your favorite type of photography (ask the camera store person help with that one).

Good luck, and take lots and lots of pictures.

  8. Probably the best camera that you can buy under $500 is the Nikon D40. It's about $470 including the kit lens.

How are these pictures going to be used? If these are for serious promotion, then the camera with the kit lens may not be adequate. You will likely need additional lenses & light sources, all of which are quite expensive. If the use is for informal promotions, like showing to the neighborhood pubs to get the bands some exposure, then the D40 may be more than adequate.
