  1. war and peace probably

  2. I think something like Atonement would be good as it is an excellent book which people will know and is very romantic and very well written.

It has also been made into a film and so you could watch the film as a treat after you've read it.

  3. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is good for girls, although some might consider it too mature for 8th graders. Also Hoot by Carl Hiaasen is pretty easy going and appeals to middle schoolers. I'd recommend you wait on Catcher on the Rye, which is a great book, until you're older.

  4. Try R.L Stine. not his goosebumps books but his fear street books are amazing.

  5. Anything by Robert Cormier - like The Bumblebee Flies Anyway (it was made into a movie, too) or After the First Death.

Scott O'Dell is also popular. His book, The Black Pearl would be appropriate.

If you want a book written by a woman, you can try out Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.  It's autobiographical about a girl and her sisters set during the Civil War and beyond.

Lois Lowry is a great author.  She wrote The Giver, and it's been used often in school reading lists.

There a several lists on the internet, and I've got you linked to two of them here:

If you can find a book that won some sort of award, it will qualify as a book you can use for a book report.  (There is a link to the different awards is below. You can click on the name of the award, and it will take you to a list of books that recently won that award)
