Recommend dvd editing software pls?

Question

hi there i have a dvd cam that records onto mini dvd discs and breaks the recording into scenes, no software came with this item and currently i only have the editing software that goes with windows xp, i seem to have a problem when i transfer the mini discs to pc as each time i use i copy a new disc the file names are the same, if i change them it moves the order around, so i need something that allows me to merge say 2 mini discs into one saved file for burning onto a reg dvd for play back on dvd player, preferably something free to download if poss any suggestions ? thanks in advance.

i know that on video studio you can edit video files. its actually really good but costs money.
