Question:

Recommend some good British Literature?

I have a free reading assignment in my Senior AP Language class. We're suppose to pick a British novel with literary merit and read it.

Brit Lit takes up the majority of my bookshelf, but the problem is, I've already read them all. I've gone through all my Tolkien & C. S. Lewis books, Wuthering Heights, The Secret Garden, etc., etc.

I know there's tons more out there, so is there any good reads you would recommend? Please, keep it to the classics (Harry Potter isn't what I'm looking for...not implying they aren't good books or anything).

Thanks. =)

  1. Tom Jones: a foundling by Henry Fielding. Its meant to have the best structured and fluent plot of all the classics plus its a fantastic read!!

    Thomas Hardy is a favourite of mine, many see him as bleak and morose but his life was an unhappy one and this was reflected within his work. some of the best books to read by him are Tess of the D'urbervilles or Jude the obscure.his imagery is without comparison to any other author. also try Charles Dickens his works are truly epic and completely engrossing. Dickens campaigned for better rights for the poor so you'll find a lot of his works feature cruelty to the poor and a philanthropic benefactor. Elizabeth Gaskell is a very underestimated author her works Ruth, Mary Barton and North and South are all sublime. Her work is influenced by the indutrialisation of the nation which is highly prevalent in North and South. Really i couldn't praise North and South higher than being one of my favourite books you really must try it. also, there's George Eliot, t.s.Eliot and Oscar Wilde to try. another favourite of mine that isn't quite a classic is angela carter. her work is pure magical fun i implore you to try her also. hope some of this helps.

  2. The Great Gatsby. One of the best books ever.

    Oh shoot you're right. I'm sorry. I guess I wasn't paying attention. I was thinking about books I read for a class that consisted of mostly British literature but not all. I definitely takes place in New York City. Whoops. Sorry about that.

    How about a Canadian author.... :)
