Me and my teenager daughter are travelling to Italy in mid May and are booking our flight on Monday, but we are just wondering which airport we should book to. We would like to visit Verona, Venice, Florence, Tuscany, Siena, Rapallo, maybe Genoa and Liguria. And if we still have enough money left then we may go down to Naples. We are going to Italy for about 12-14 nights. Anyway, which of these airport's would you recommend us flying too from the UK, which would make train trips accessible and cheap and is just generally the best city to start off with?

  1. Well, Since Florence and Siena are in Tuscany and Rapallo, Liguria and Genoa are  in Liguria  and Venice and Verona are in Veneto. Would advise you to buy and open jaw ticket- meaning you would fly into one city and fly out of another. I would fly into Florence and fly out of Venice.

You could travel by train throughout your trip in Italy,

I would buy point to point to point tickets

While in Tuscany I would stay in  Florence and take that train to  Siena  on a day trip. Montepulciano is another city in this region I would recommend seeing.

In Liguria, I would stay in Rapallo and do day trips to Genoa and the little town in Liguria that you want to see.

In Veneto  Stay outside of Venice in the town of Mestre as Venice is very expensive and take the 10 minute train ride into Venice.  Then take the train to Verona. The train ride is about 2 hours

I would recommend to visit Rome if you have extra funds .  I would put  it in the middle between  Tuscany and Liguria.  Stay at least 3 days in Rome.

  2. I can't say about train trips etc, but I flew into Milan from the States and the airport was awful.  I'm sorry that doesn't exactly answer your question, but I thought I'd pass it on anyway.  I hope you have a great time!

  3. I personally flew into the airports that were the cheapest at the time (in at Verona and out at Bologna), then I planned my trip around them, working out my route (although I flew in with ryanair and the airports were not actually in verona or bologna but they supply buses to them for a fee)

Get a map and find a place you think you would like to start eg start north and head south or vice versa and plan a route or possilbe route.

There are great train (Trentitalia) services to the main places and the buses do the rest, so thats not a problem and makes it easy to get around.

Try this website to help with flights, it has most of the main airlines.  Have fun...I loved it!!

  4. Why don't you book a tour or coach tour, they are escorted and quite an adventure.
