Question:

Recommendations for cheap family hotels in France that will take 2 parents & three kids?

We drive from Calais to the South of France several times a year, and break up the journey with an over-night stop. We've usually been paying around 100Eu for a room in ** or *** city centre hotels. We're keen to try some of the cheaper chains (Campanille, etc.) but on many of the websites there's a mention of "two children" or max of three people to a room. Our three children are all under five and sometimes only one of us is travelling with them: can anyone recommend a budget hotel brand in France that will allow two parents/three kids or one parent/three kids to stay? Many thanks.

  1. If you're going anywhere near Amboise (near Chenonceaux and really close to Tour), I'd go to the Novotel near the city. They're a really nice chain kinda like a nice Holiday Inn. Their double rooms are reasonbly priced and spacious (a good find in France).

  2. I have used Premierclasse hotels - fairly basic but €32 for a room. Also Bonsai.

If you come through central France I have a gite with a double bed and 2 singles. We could add a cot or a camped for the 5th person if wanted. We are 30 minutes from the motorway A20 near Chateauroux. Website http://frenchgite.monsite.orange.fr/

  3. I almost don't want to share this secret... but we always stay in the utterly beautiful Hotel des Canonniers in St Quentin (www.hotel-canonniers.com), about an hour and a half from Calais, so perfect for late night cheap ferry crossings...

Ask for an apartment (Oiseaux is the prettiest one, with murals of crumbly walls), or the other apartment is decorated in modern style. They each have two bedrooms, a little kitchen, bathroom and sitting room.

There are also about seven double rooms. Madame is heaven, although a little scary at first -- it is her family townhouse. Delicious breakfasts and St Quentin ships in several tons of sand to create a beach in the town square in the summer!  We love it and it is very reasonable.

  4. ive stayed in the b&b chain in France - the one in paris, one in arras  and  one in calais a few times and they are about   50euros a night per room - i think its a max of 4 per room tho - they do a family room but every time we have been we never see anyone who works there!!! - you book online and they give you a number to enter the hotel carpark with your car  then when you arrive you use the credit card you used to book with and put it in a machine on the outside of the hotel - this gives you a number to enter the hotel and your room number. If your children are small and could share a bed this might be worth looking into.    the hotels are always basic standard but clean, breakfast buffet is great. hope this helps                                                                                                                         http://www.hotel-bb.com/
