You can try Scribd.com { http://www.scribd.com } or the KnowFree,net { http://knowfree.net }. Both are free services and rely on user submitted contents. They are a good place for free ebooks

Have you tried Project Gutenberg?  I've been getting Public Domain books there in html or text and if I want to take them with me on my Palm, I convert them using DocReader by Mike Pickering.

Interested in the Sherlock Holmes omnibus??  ;-)
