Question:

Recommended locations for a birthday party in NYC?

I'm looking for recommendations for party locations. We are planning a 22nd surprise party for a friend and the location fell through at the last minute. The party is for Saurday, July 19th around 10/11pm. We are expecting 20-30 people. The place doesnt have to be upscale, just have room and be fun. We are looking for a place where we can reserve space but there isn't a large fee (preferably no fee, otherwise under $200 fee). Also, we are looking for a place that a few (3-6) guests that are under 21 but over 18 could get into, but where the rest of the party could purchase drinks etc. (So ideally this would be a place where they just card at the bar/when you order drinks and not at the door). Any ideas would be much appreciated!

  1. This is just a thought . . . .what about Hooters? You can call a head of time, like an hour before and they will save tables for you. They have inside and outside eating areas and the food ranges from wings to clams to crab legs. They card at the bar or table and they have beer and hard liquor. They also make virgin pina coladas and other fun drinks for the under 21 year olds. Also, if you tell your waitress who's birthday it is, she will have all the waitresses sing happy bday to your friend. Just an idea!

  2. Not sure what location in NYC works better for you - but here are 2 recommendations - one midtown east and the other midtown west.

Connolly's - E.47th Street (btw Madison & 5th) - walking distance from Grand Central and the green line (6) train.  I had a suprise party at this location - they were great.  You can ask them for bracelets for those over 21 so they can serve them OR give the bracelets to the under 21 folks so they know not to serve them.

McGee's Pub - W 55th btw 8th & Broadway - great place too.  We've had a number of work functions and they will work with you - just give them a call and tell them what you are looking to do.  They'll help you if they can.

    Good luck!

  3. Wow a bit last minute huh.  Well IF you can get something lined up this late in the game you can try the two places below:

There's a place on the upper east side called The Stumble Inn.  It's a fairly new place and they have a private party room (the private room isn't mentioned on the link below, but they advertise it on their awning out front).

It's a restaurant so the under 21's will have no problem getting in...I just don't know if they have a fee for their private room.

Also right next door is Iggy's, a pretty popular (American, not Korean style) Karaoke spot.  They also take parties but instead of a private room, they reserve tables for you and you sing karaoke with all the other customers.

They have a menu but I'm not sure that they qualify as a suitable place for under 21's but they do have under 21 parties there so you can ask them what they can do to accommodate your situation.
