Recommended recreational bike for new rider?

Question

Hi. I'm a middle-aged adult who hasn't ridden a bike in at least 20 years. I want to start riding for exercise and to save a little on gasoline. I'm looking for a good beginner level bike to ride on local bike paths and for short errands.

I went bicycle shopping last weekend and wound up more confused than ever. Prices are much higher than I expected, and there are sure a lot more options than there were when I was a kid.

I don't need anything fancy, and I don't want anything that will be targetted by thieves.

Any recommendations???

I have a Trek Soho and like it alot.

I have the Soho S (one-speed) - but they have several versions - with extra speeds. Simple, elegant, no-nonsense.

BTW - "Excellant" - the asker was looking for a "recommendation".  I agree with you generally about the people who ask which brand is "best" - but if someone asks for a recommendation, they are looking for a recommendation.  While it is true that people should try it on for size and such - it's still just a recommendation.

Bacon hit the nail in the head. Trek's SOHO is a great commuter bike that isn't going to be a total brick and offers a few different spec. options to meet the needs of everyone from the weekend warrior to the daily commuter.
