  1. What type of work will you be looking for? Do you want to rent or buy a house? What is your budget for housing? Private or state schools?

Most suburbs of Brisbane are safe and nice places to live. The most upmarket areas are in the western suburbs (the ones north of the river) and places around Ascot and Clayfield to the northeast and north and pretty well anywhere on the river.

Most of the northern and eastern suburbs are decent places to live. I don't much like the southside and wouldn't live there myself, but there are some decent areas over there too.

Schools tend to take on the character of the surrounding areas. Good suburbs have good schools with few discipline problems. Schools in bad suburbs can have some great teachers and some fantastic kids, but their lives are made difficult by the bad behaviour of a minority of kids with uncaring parents.

I personally wouldn't want to live in Oxley, Darra or Inala, but there are industrial areas near them where work can probably be found. I would also stay away from Redbank, Goodna and Gailes which are in the same general area as the above. There are also some decent suburbs in that general area like Forest Lake, Springfield and Collingwood Park. Also over there (but closer in) are Jindalee which is OK and Mount Ommaney which is very expensive.

On the southside, I definitely wouldn't go near Woodridge or Kingston or anywhere else near there, but again, there is probably work in surrounding industrial areas.

Most of the north is OK. I only know of Morayfield as being less than desirable and that's a long way out in Caboolture Shire.

If you can answer the questions above, we'll be able to give more specific answers.

    EDIT:

    Thanks for answering the questions.

Moggill is in the western suburbs and is really lovely but very expensive. It's mostly acreage blocks with large houses. Bellbowrie is near there and there should be quite a few reasonable rentals there, and you'll also find decent rentals in parts of Kenmore which is a bit nearer town. Some areas of Kenmore are very upmarket, but there are also large areas that are more affordable but still green and pleasant. The schools in that area are among the best public schools in Brisbane. For primary schools, Moggill and Pullenvale  are small and very nice. Kenmore is larger and has a good reputation as does Kenmore South SS. Kenmore State High School is one of the best 2 or 3 in Brisbane with a great reputation and very good results.

Try looking for work across the river in Ipswich (there's a car ferry) or in Sumner Park (on the Centenary Highway) and the industrial estates to the south of the Ipswich Motorway. It's also fairly easy to get from the western suburbs via the back way to some of the northwestern light industrial areas near Everton Park. If you need to go further afield, the Logan Motorway (toll road) will take you to the very large industrial, light industrial and large commercial areas on the southside.

  2. I can't help but say the Bayside Suburbs, they tend to be cooler in Summer and warmer in Winter. Although this year, the winter did get a bit colder, it has been down to a low of 7C overnight where I am.

Most of the Southern Bayside areas are pretty safe, especially away from the Railway Stations, and good shopping & good schools.

You mention "Public" schooling.  In the UK "Public" schools are private, but here Public schools are State run.  So I get easily confused on that point.

  3. I think Ozmaniac has answered your question very well, but I would like to add that if you want to live around the Moggill area then avoid places like Goodna, Riverview, Dinmore and Collingwood Park too.  These areas aren't really the best places to bring up kids (in my opinion), there are heaps of indigenous and Samoan families in Dinmore, Riverview and Goodna.  You only have to read the paper to see the problems with groups of these youths, and yes there are all races in these 'gangs', so the housing values remain quite low (comparatively)

Collingwood Park is a nice place, but has had recent problems with housing subsiding due to underground mines.

Try to visit your family in Moggill and ask them for some local, inside knowledge about the area.  There is a huge aluminium works - Capral, at Bundamba.  I'm sure they would have fork lift drivers employed there.
