Record Entries accepted for 2012 U.S. Women's Open
U.S. Women’s Open 2012 has accepted a record 1,364 entries for the event.
The number of players competing in the 2010 edition of the tournament was 1,296. The marked increase in the contestants is a testament of the prestige of the tournament and its standing in the international golf.
USGA has a high opinion of the tournament and the participants.  According to Thomas J. O’Toole Jr., USGA Vice President and Chairman of the Championship Committee, “The women who have applied to play in the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open represent the best female
golfers in the world”.
This is the ninth consecutive time the entries have exceeded the thousand-mark. However, this increasing number is not a problem for the management.
It has sealed the reputation of the event as the top tournament on the international golfing calendar.
The event is scheduled to be held in the Blackwolf Run, Kohler, Wisconsin. The course is among the best in the US and many international players have favourable comments about the layout of the holes.
The statistics released for the event are interesting and reveal a worldwide interest in the event.
In addition to the 44 US states, applicants hail from Great Britain, Spain, Bahamas, France, Canada, Netherlands, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Belgium, New Zealand and Japan.
Age is another statistic that was measured by the management. It turned out that the oldest applicant was Bobbi Lancaster, aged 61, from Gold Canyon, Arizona, USA.
Interestingly, the youngest applicant was also from the US. Elizabeth Wang from Marino, California, is just 11 years old and is one of the contenders at the tournament.
The registration for the event opened on March 5th, 2012. First to lodge the application was Abby Newton, aged 17 and hails from Katy, Texas.
The last entry was of Ashley Sholer from Canada. Her application was received just five minutes before the deadline, on May 2, 2012.
The event will run from July 5 to 8. It will be the 67th edition of the tournament. The U.S. Women’s Open Championship is one of the 13 events held by the US Golf Association.
It was first held in 1946, and is now considered a major highlight of the LPGA Tour.  It attracts some of the best players from all over the world.
Participation is open to all amateur and professional golfers. This relaxed condition is perhaps one of the reasons of the increasing number of entries each year.
Female players, professional and amateur, try their level best to get accepted in the tournament.
Many players see the event as a chance to play against some of the top players in the world. Amateurs, particularly gain substantial experience as they play against the top pros in the world.
