In 1959 Max Conrad flew a single engine plane (Piper Comanche) solo from Casablanca to Los Angeles non stop and non refueled.  A distance record that still stands for that class airplane.

Amelia Earhart had a few firsts. She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic ocean and the first person to fly solo between California and Hawaii nonstop, among many other records. These are just a few. There are hundreds of records held by hundreds of notable pilots. You can find quite a bit more information at the links below. The first is a listing of the Aviation Hall of Fame. The second is a list of aviation pioneers. I wish I could list more here, but there's so much to list that large books have been written on the subject.
