Record breaking run at Zia Park by Imco Spirit in the Premiere Cup Handicap on 11 September
Henry Dominguez trained Imco Spirit flattened his rivals in the biggest upset at Zia Park on 11 September, 2011, in the $100,000 Premiere Cup Handicap, and while doing so, he broke the previous record at Zia Park over 6 furlongs of 1 minute and 8.60 seconds,
easily, by setting a new record of 1 minute and 7.13 seconds.
It was a blazing run by the son of Invincible Spirit, downing the hot 2 to 5 favourite, Native Ruler, by a massive margin of four lengths, who stood no chance against the blinding pace of Imco Spirit.
Native Ruler came in third as Pack Your Bags deprived him of the second place finish by a neck.
In the beginning, Pack Your Bags vied for the lead, but Tactful and Bonndaddy’s tandem aimed to take the lead away, and the three of them toed the field, setting brisk fractions of 21.73 seconds for the first quarter mile and then 43.51 seconds for the half
mile marker.
When the lot turned home for the final turn, Imco Spirit advanced forward with purpose and took everyone by surprise.
The pacey runner came wide into the stretch and started pulling away with remarkable speed. Imco Spirit was making his first start since April, 2011.
Imco Spirit was ridden by Miguel Perez for owners, Judy and Kirk Robison, and Solitaire Stable.
His last win came way back in 2010, when he ran in the 6 ½ furlong dash in an optional claimer.
It was the 2010 Del Mar season, and the horse was cut back in distance prior to another race at Del Mar, run over a distance of 1 mile, and Imco Spirit lost terribly and rolled in eighth on 7 August, 2010.
On 29 August, 2010, Imco Spirit took on Indy Ride and Dazzling Raz under jockey C Nakatani, winning the 6 ½ furlong sprint by completing the distance in 1 minute and 16.90 seconds.
Premiere Cup Handicap was Imco Spirit’s fifth win in 19 career starts, and he earned $59,400 for the win, which upped his lifetime earnings to $268,807.
