Record in HD, but using Standard MiniDV?

Hi all, I just want to know, what happen if I record in HD format, but I stil use the standard MiniDV Tape?

  1. which is why you'd want to shoot with TWO cameras to cover the action and any cross-over time when exchanging tapes.

It's the same tape, but (I'm told) the build quality is better.  HD uses MPEG-2 encoding, which uses a "Group of Pictures (GOP)".  With DV, each frame contains all the information needed for that frame, so any drop out means you'll lose just the one frame.  With MPEG-2, if you have a drop out you'll lose the entire GOP, maybe half a second of video.  Chances are you'll be OK, but I'd hate to shoot a wedding video of the bride saying "I d...."!
