Record keeping by UK banks?

how many years the banks in uk keeps their costumers record. Example:

I had an account with Barclays, I just closed it and it will remain in my credit file for another six years BUT for how many years my data will be in the barclays's own record? any one working inside banks for long time or anyone regulating banks

  1. I believe they keep data for 7 years, however I doubt there is any special process of 'removing' (deleting) old data so I am going to suggest the answer is 'until they loose it' ... and that will most likley happen when they next update their computer systems (or get taken over .. as Abby customers will be well aware :-) )
