Record seven players share the lead at the US Senior Open Championship – Golf news
Tom Lehman finished with a birdie for a three-under par 67 in the opening round of the US Senior Open Championship to share top spot with Gary Hallberg, Mark O’Meara, Fred Funk, jay Don Blake, Michael Allen and Kenny Perry.
This is the first time in the history of the US Senior Open Championship that a total of seven players shared the lead after day one of the event.
The previous record was set by five people when they shared the lead in the 1997 edition of the tournament.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, Lehman said that the field will automatically thin out as the tournament progresses.
“In one round, 18 holes, it's like a sprint,” Lehman said. “Over the course of four rounds, which is more like a marathon, things really do spread out. The field will thin out.”
Perry, in the meantime, was really pleased to make another good start, as he is currently eying his second consecutive victory in the senior major golf championships, having won the Constellation Senior Players Championship last month.
Perry recorded a total of five birdies against two birdies to finish one-stroke ahead of a group of four players that shared the eighth spot on the leaderboard.
Talking to the reporters, he expressed his disappointment in missing out on a chance of recording an easy an easy 5-foot eagle putt on the sixth hole. At the same time, he was pleased with his performance on the par-five holes on the venue course.
“I took care of the par 5s today and drove it nicely, kept it in the fairway, kept it in play,” Perry said.
According to Perry, hitting the fairways at the Omaha Country Club will play a key role in recording a victory in the event.
Meanwhile, Funk was also happy to overcome difficult playing conditions in Omaha, and said that he will have to work really hard in the remaining rounds to keep his name on the top.
“When you get tough conditions and you're playing good, you get rewarded,” Funk said. “More than likely, the guy that's playing the best in these kinds of conditions will be at the top. Hopefully, it will be me.”
