Question:

Recorded phone message a scam??

I've received three calls, all at 6.30am. They are recorded messages in an English accent saying that there is an emergency call for Nigel Elson, and to press 1. Of course, I don't, but I don't know how to make these stop. I'm in Canada, so US government orgs don't help. Also, what would happen if I press 1? I won't, I'm just curious as to why this is happening.

  1. Chances are the wrong number I haven't heard about a scam like that.  You could check scam.com and see if anyone else has reported a scam like this.  I have gotten calls like those in the states.  If I don't know the person I never respond.  Eventually they will stop when they realize the number is wrong.

I suspect that if you press 1 you will be connected to the call and may be charged a fee for long distance or something like that. I wouldn't press 1 if you don't know who the person is.

  2. there was a scandal that said that when you pressed one there would be charges to your account. long distance ones

  3. I heard a little about this scam about 2 years ago. DO NOT press 1. If you do they can make long distance calls and charge you. Report it to your phone company.
