What type of microphone would I use if i wanted to make a video with high sound quality? Would i need more than the microphone? It has to be freestanding on a mic stand, because it will be used for shooting a short film. Do you recommend multiple?

  1. There are a few things you need to consider...

    1) How will your camera connect the mic? Many consumer-grade camcorders do not have a mic jack.

    2) The audio pick up is best when the mic is closest to the person speaking. What is your budget? Can you afford a wireless lavaliere or two?

    3) If a lav is not possible, then a shotgun mic is likely the next best option. The good ones will typically use XLR connectors - but most consumer camcorders use 1/8" (3.5mm) mic jacks... so you need an XLR adapter. This can be as simple as an XLR-1/8" cable adapter or as complex as an XLR adapter from BeachTek. The reason you want XLR is they are generally "balanced" cables and can be really long (over 15 feet from the mic to the camera) and will have much less chance picking up interference from nearby lights or other sources of electromagnetic interference.
