Recording On VHS?????????

I wanted to record some things w/ my vhs and a blank tape, I press record and it doesn't do it, help?

Also make sure the record tab is not missing from the blank tape.  It is that little square piece of plastic that is on the left hand side of where the label goes.  Make sure the plastic piece is still there, if it is not, get some tape to tape over it.
