Question:

Recumbents are more comfortable and (i think) can go faster--why get an upright bike?

if they cant go faster than i guess please let me know and just say whether there are any other reasons.

  1. They can't go faster. One reason is because you can't put your body weight on the pedals as you can with an upright bike. If recumbents were fastest, you'd see them in the Tour de France, n'est ce pas?


  2. The comfort issue depends a lot...  Ultimately on a recumbant you're sitting on muscle instead of bone which has less potential for being comfortable.

    an upright road bike is extremely comfortable if you have it fitted correctly and have the requisite fitness and flexibility.  At the end of long races the riders are tired but they generally aren't sore.  I don't think most recumbent riders can say the same after 5 or 6 hours on the bike.

    Also upright bikes accelerate and handle much better

  4. They do NOT go faster up hill. They are also harder for motorists to see.

    No you would not see them in the Tour de France as they are illegal for racing.
