Question:

Recurrent ear mites in kitten - help?

Hi - kitten came to me weeks ago with ear mites. Took him to the vet who prescribed ear drops for 7 days and 3 doses of Stronghold, to be taken once a month.

I thought the ear mites were gone after the applications but, after about 2 weeks of clear ears, they're back again and he's scratching.

Is this common in kittens that the mites are persistent little buggers?

Is the only option to just persist and persist with the Stronghold until they go?

And could this take months?!

Thanks

  1. Kittens that are over 2lbs are able to be put on Revolution.  Ask your vet about it because it:

    ~Prevents heartworm

~Kills fleas and prevents eggs from hatching

    ~Controls roundworms & hookworms

    AND

    ~Treats and controls ear mites

Luckily my cats have not had ear mites, but they have been given Revolution for fleas.  It's a pretty good deal it takes care of all of these problems.  Make sure your kitty doesn't have heartworm though, I think it is dangerous to give them a heartworm preventative if they have it.  The Revolution is be applied monthly and help take care of your ear mite problem.  You can actually buy it at www.petshed.com, but I do suggest you ask your vet first.  Good luck!

  2. ear mites are difficult to get rid of and ear mites are persistent.  probably just going to have to take kitten back to vet for another prescription or call your vet to get another prescription.  you will get rid of them eventually.

  3. Strange. I'm not sure if ear mites can lurk in your house, but I'd clean up immaculately just in case. I've only ever had one cat with ear mites and all we did was use an OTC ear mite solution and clean it out with q-tips daily until they were gone.

I've never seen them actually come again after the fact.
