Question:

Recycle? Compost? Throw Away? What do you do with wax paper or paper that's become oily from food?

I'd like to find out what can be done about paper that's become soiled or oily from contact with food. Can these be mixed in with other organic stuff for composting? Or can these be included in a pile for recycling, just separated from clean, dry paper? What is recommended?

Also, I have read that wax paper may or not be composted or recycled, depending on whether it is really wax-coated (yes) or plastic-laminated (no). However, more often than not, it is advised to exclude wax paper from either composting or recycling. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance, all.

  1. in primary school we weren't allowed to used glad wrap so we used wax paper and everyone just recycled it and it was fine, no one ever told us off so i think recycling should be fine

  2. Generally, it can't be recycled as it is coated with a layer of wax. (more chemical needed to wash away the wax)  Besides, it is dirty after we used it to wrap food, most people refuse to collect it. And it is not suitable to be compost as well, as the wax will contaminate the soil. The best solution is to avoid using wax paper, and substitute it with the biodrgradeble food container. Other than that, encourange and educate them to use their own container if they wanted to take away.

  3. In truth, it's best to talk to your local recycling department.  The reason I suggest this is that not all areas recycle the same stuff.  Some areas recycle few items while others can recycle a wide range of items.  They are the ones most qualified to give you the right answer.  You should be able to find the number in your - dare I say it - phone book or on your city's website, if they have one.  Or you could go to your area's recycling center and speak with them directly.

May not be the answer you want, but it's the best I have to offer.  Hope it helps.
