  1. This data does not directly answer your question but it does sort of hint at the answer. These recycling percentages indicate what fraction of each type of commodity were recycled in 2005:

    Newspaper - 88.9%

    Cardboard boxes - 71.5%

    Steel Cans - 62.9%

    Yard Trimmings - 61.9%

    Aluminum Cans - 44.8%

    Magazines - 38.5%

Plastic Bottles, soft drink - 34.1%

    Plastic Bottles, other - 28.8%

    Glass containers - 25.3%

I think we can deduce from this that about 90% of people recycle at least their news papers. The differences in recycling rates probably reflect differences in the types of materials that are accepted for curb-side recycling. I am guessing that most places accept newspaper but fewer places accept the other types of items. Also some areas may allow mixed recycling and others require sorted recycling. That may also affect how many people recycle those items. For instance where I live you can mix cans, glass, and plastic, which makes that kind of recycling easy and so more likely to happen. A few years ago all three had to be separated and so it was harder and I didn't recycle bottles and cans quite as much as I do now.
