  1. Three words BLEACH-CLEAN-DRY

    1. Take it outside near a hose. Clean the bin with a 10% bleach and warm soapy water solution. Rinse with water. Turn up-side-down and allow it to air dry.

    2. Only put clean recyclables in your bin. Rinse out any cans or bottles that go into the bin with water first. If possible allow them to air dry before putting them in the bin.

    3. Try to keep your bins clean and dry. Maggots like dirty, dark, wet places. Can you keep the bin in a sheltered area such as a porch? If not, try keeping bin off the ground on a pallet or some scraps of 2x4.

Drill a few 1/4-1/2 inch drain holes in the lowest parts of the bottom of the bin so moisture drains out.

    Hope that helps!

  2. hot soapy water with a little bleach should do the trick

  3. clean it with soap and water. and then put a liner in it. technically all recyclables should be cleaned before being put in for recycling, but we know that never happens. but you shouldn't be getting maggots unless you're getting a lot of trash in those bins as well. the other option is to get more than one recycling bin and have it sorted, that way you can determine the source and figure out a new plan for dealing with it.

  4. They are very proficient at eating dead flesh, mabey you should collect them and apply them to a wound....they speed the healing process along and do not harm the live tissue. Just kidding, mabey you need to rinse empty containers better?

  5. CLEAN IT!

  6. Maggots are fly larvea, I'm sure you already knew that, so the simple solution is don't let flys get to the bin, find a way to cover it, or don't give the flys a reason to want to go into the bin, rinse the food off before you put items into the bin. I wash my counters off with soapy water everyday, so when I'm done I use this water to rinse the tins a bottles.

  7. dont trow away food!

there are stray cats and dogs going hungry...

  8. Put the maggots somewhere where they will grow up (please don't kill them). Then wash with soap and water.

  9. HOT Water, Soap & Bleach!

  10. put some chemichals that flies hate(not those smelly kinds)

  11. Make sure you rinse off food off your bottles or cans before you put them in there!

  12. Give them to someone who goes fishing or if you have lots sell them and make some cash

  13. Over 30+ years of recycling and I have never had even one maggot in a recycling bin. Someone is putting in items that are contaminated with food.

Pizza boxes that have grease on them should not go in.

Same for other take out food wrappers that have food particles &/or grease on them.

Sounds like your bins are located in a school. This is hard as not all students will be on board with your recycling efforts. May need to do continuous education with more signs, posters, meetings, etc.

PS Are these Recycling Bins OR Composting Bins. If this is for composting that is a whole different set of answers.

  14. You must be recycling food containers and garbage, garbage being organic (leftovers) waste as opposed to trash or newspaper, cans, glass, plastic, etc.

Maggots bring birds, which can be a nice thing, but maggots bring opossum and raccoons, mice and rats that can result in the transmission of all kinds of diseases including rabies.  Not to mention a rodent infestation that could occur.  These animals bite and it could harm children.  I would consider this a public health matter and if your local government doesn't won't or can't take steps to correct it then you need take it to the state health officials.

Have you tried  tried the local television stations or CDC in Atlanta?
