  1. This site is a perfect example of how direct recycling works. It's a way to pass something you don't need on to others who can use it  and at the same time to feel good about it.

The recycling process my city uses works indirectly by asking us to separate our trash into colored cans. The green can is for organic waste and is converted into mulch, ideally. The blue can is for household waste such as paper, cans, and plastic items. These are separated at the dump by workers. Then the separate products are shipped to centers for recycling where they are melted down and eventually used to make new products. The black can is for things which can be safely buried in a land fill.

  2. A couple of things which I can think of off the top of my head are that there are only so many resources on the planet, so it's important that we reuse materials so that we don't run out. It also conserves energy when you recylce, because you aren't using more energy to make new materials. Not to mention that when you recycle you are keeping these materials out of landfills, therefor keeping the planet cleaner. It saves money too.

  3. Recycling is simply a new word for what people have done all through history, which is to use a thing for as long as it is useful and when it no longer fulfils its role, to then find another use for it - or its parts.  Only recently have people been wealthy enough to dispense with something just because they tire of it or want what they percieve to be a newer an thus ( to them ) better alternative.  Antiques are the high end of recycling.  Good luck with the speech.

  4. Recycling is the process of using something over and over again some times for the same thing and some times for a diffent thing.  When we recyle plastics bottles we know that soon they will be new plastic bottles. But I like to look for creative ways to recycle.  Like making quilts out of old or outgrown clothing. Making a suncatcher out of broken colored glass. or a swing out of an old tire.  Recycling is not a new thing.  It has been around for all of time. It is just in recent times and in more industrialized countries were there is so much excess that it seems ok to some people to just throw away the things that they can't use right that minute.   I

  5. Hi,

I work as a Waste and Recycling Advisor.

The most important thing to think about actually comes before recycling. The priority of waste management is to reduce i.e. don't create the waste in the first place if you can help it.

For example - to reduce the amount of packaging waste that you create, make differences to your purchasing decisions - buy refills or products in packaging that can easily be recycled.

The next step (before recycling) is to reuse. e.g. if you take a bag from the shop, take it back and reuse it the next time you go shopping. You could also donate good quality items to your local charity shop - somebody else can reuse it and your chosen charity will gain funds.

Finally, recycle where possible - firstly via your local council kerbside collection scheme. You may also be able to take additional items to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (these are provided by county councils and are usually situated on the outskirts of town). It may also be possible to collect some items for charities such as stamps and tin foil.

To reduce, reuse and recycle is commonly known as the 3 R's.

The physical recycling process is different for every recyclable item and may also vary depending upon where you live. However, to recycle many items uses a mere fraction of the resources used in making them from new.

Another key fact with regards to recycling is that we must 'close the loop' i.e. buy recycled products. Plastic bottles can be turned into fleeces, tetra pak cartons can be turned into mouse mats, the list is endless.

I hope this helps and that it makes sense as my mind is working overtime!

    Good luck with your project

    Sabrina :)
