Recycling Question-Envelopes with the little plastic windows?

So there I was today sorting and paying my bills, throwing away all those ads and credit offers (yes I shred the stuff that could get me in trouble) and I end up with a large amount of those envelopes with plastic windows in them.

Some of the mail have two, one that I open and one I'm supposed to send something to the company. Fat chance for them, I pay my bills on the internet and can't afford to get books and magazines through the mail. That's what libraries are for.

I used to rip out the little windows and recycle but now they are glued in so tight they seem fused.

So what do you say?

a. toss them

b. recycle with windows

c. The reclying companies love those little windows they give body to recycled cardboard and toilet paper !

  1. b)  Post-consumer paper mills have systems that can take out these small amounts of contaminants.

What they can't recycle is any paper that won't disolve in water.  To test just feel for a waxy or plastic feel.  A good example is the wrapper that comes on reams of paper.

  2. I agree with a previous poster in that you should take notes on it first, then recycle.

As for the window, it is fine.  No worries - throw it in.

Be sure to tear off metal brads, string or other non-paper items on it.

  3. B

  4. B is correct.

Any envelopes can be recycled even if there's clear windows in it.

  5. I believe that the envelopes with plastic windows can be recycled now.

  6. You should double check with your local department of public works, but generally speaking the windows are not recyclable.  You can cut off the plastic window part and recycle the rest of the envelope.  Don't  recycle the plastic.  Some recyclers may throw a out the whole batch if its contaminated.

  7. Throw them in the recycle bin as they are. Most paper recycling firms expect a certain amount of contamination and not everything is 100% recyclable.

Just you recycling instead of throwing into the trash is a good deal.

  8. I tear out the window, reuse the envelopes for notes or lists, THEN recycle.

  9. Just tear off the window including the paper backing  it's glued to , throw the window away, recycle the rest of the envelope!  Your still recycling 95% of the envelope and cutting waste as well!

  10. Send those envelopes back to the company in the pre-paid envelopes along with their junk mail and a note about going green.  It won't cost you a dime!  Hit companies where it hurts.... paying the prepaid postage.    Companies will get the message and lessen the amount of junk mail they send or find alternatives.
