Question:

Recycling help!!!?

I have a few questions on how I can recycle:

1. Can I recycle regular papers with my newspaper? If not, where do I take regular papers to be recycled?

2. Can I recycle lined paper and paper with writing on it (pen AND pencil... I have a lot of old school handouts)? If not, what is the best thing to do with this paper?

If you could just give me some general information on recycling and what I should do, that would be awesome.

Thankyou!

  1. i hope so, i know that they sort out the stuff, but at my local recycling drop off place, there is all kinds of junk mixed in the bins.  I read that a pound of the wrong type of glass will ruin a ton of proper recycled glass.  Paper would seem to me to be equal, but check with your place to be sure, its horrible to think that one person could ruin the efforts of hundreds.

  2. all the paper can go together.

as for writing on the paper, don't worry about it.  The paper is washed clean before it's made into new stuff.

remember the rule to live by when recycling: if it costs more energy to make a recycled product then a new one, it's not worth recycling.

  3. I think that u could do so by recycling it , I always recycle after I used the both side of the regular papers.

  4. It depends on where you live.  To be sure, contact your local recycling coordinator in your town or county.  Usually, you can recycle almost any paper, except for stuff lined with wax, or something like an envelope with plastic envelopes or bubble lining.  As long as it isn't wax ink or crayon, writting on the paper should not make a difference.  If your town will not accept your school paper, you can always shred it up and use it in composting.

  5. You technically can put mixed paper (junk mail, handouts from class, notes - pen and pencil, envelopes with plastic window are okay, too, etc.) and newspaper in the same bin for recycling, but check with your waste management company -- they'll have the best answer for you.

Also, make sure that the paper hasn't been soiled/contaminated or coated with anything that makes it not recycleable.  Waxed cardboard, food contaminated paper, blueprints or carbon paper and the like would be likely candidates of such.

I dont think hardback books (textbooks, etc) are currently being recycled (but again, check with your local waste management) but the best thing to do would be to sell those books back or donate them to the library to keep them out of the landfills for as long as possible.

hope this helps :)  happy recycling!
