  1. It depends on the TV.  For example, a 19-inch CRT or LCD TV typically uses around 40 watts of power.  At the other end of the spectrum, Sharp's 65-inch LCD was found to use 583 watts in use and 76 watts even when it was "off."  Thus, the energy saved by recycling a glass bottle or jar could run one type of TV almost 15 times longer than another.

As for the actual length of time, like most environmental matters, it becomes more of a question of whom you believe than a scientifically defensible math problem.  One website says 15 minutes for a TV or an hour for a light bulb, while another says 3 hours for a TV and 4 hours for a 100-watt light bulb.  A 100-watt light bulb consumes 1.44 megajoules of energy in 4 hours.  On the other hand, a similar bulb consumes 360 kilojoules in an hour.  That means the different websites apparently assume different amounts of energy needed to recycle a glass bottle.  So, depending on which website you believe and which TV you're trying to operate, recycling just one glass bottle or jar could save enough energy to run your TV for anywhere from 10 minutes to 10 hours.

My TV doesnt run on either.  I have to plug mine into the wall.  I want one of your TV's.

  13. Okay, I just read a bunch of responses and I'll be conservative and go along with the 15 minute estimate. Since most communities (like mine) have mandatory re-cycling for things like glass bottles, why do I have to pay for all that electricity we're saving?

  16. Turn off your TV for a day and you will save enough electricity to produce how many glass bottles or jars?
