Recycling laundry water?

What's a cheap way to recycle water from washing machine so that it can at least be useful for watering plants?

  1. Use and all natural soap and run an irrigation line to a barrel for storage or garden.  You can get some neat rain barrels at www.urbangardencenter.com and run your 'grey water' to it for future irrigation.

    I would recomend 7th generation products for soap.  You could rig up all of your sink drains too, but just be sure to use all natural products for cleaning.

  2. Shaklee also has biodegradable laundry products. Stain remover and recyclable fabric softener sheets.

  3. Be aware that the recommendations of the other person in regard to running a line outside for the "gray water" from your washer is a violation of health code in most parts of the country.  Sad but true.

    It is also correct that you cannot just put water from your washer or your bath onto plants unless you are using non-petroleum-based products.  7th generation products are a good bet and work very well.

  4. You need a couple of settling tanks 500+ gallons. By the second tank the water is just fine for irrigation.
