the number one problem in recycling manufactured materials is contamination.

plastic in the aluminum. aluminum in the plastic. a used pamper in the paper. dirt in the cardboard. steel in the aluminum and vice versa. and so on.

an idea for your local prison. turn it into a transfer station. have the bad guys sort the raw garbage pick up for recycling.

Keep in mind that, once cleaned, like materials need to be sorted. Metals "alloy" but plastics do not. Plastics are man made and are Thermoplastic (can be remelted over and over) and Thermoset (once they are made into something they can not be remelted... but can be ground up and used as "filler"). Once you have sorted into Thermoplastic and Thermoset, they still are not the same. Different Thermoplastics melt at different temperatures. If you try to blend a polyethylene that melts at say 300f and decomposes at 400f with a nylon that doesn't melt till it is about 435f you will have a major mess. There is a code on the bottom of recyclable plastics. It is a triangle with a number in it. Plastics need to be sorted by the number. Because they are so light weight it takes ALOT to have any value but can be remade. PET (polyethylene terathylate) is what pop bottles are made out of and can be recycled into sweaters, t-shirts, new bottles etc. Also remember, every time plastics are melted down and reused some of the molecular chains are broken down and you can not use 100% in a new mix as it will weaken. Many studies have been done and most users of replaced plastics know what percentage is best for their application. Sorry to ramble but hope it helps.
