depends on your garbage collection.  Some counties only do the basics paper/glass/aluminum.  others go far and beyond and do plastics, Styrofoams, other metals.  you can always find a scrapper or recycle center near you that will take the things your garbage collection wont take.  there really isn't anything that cannot be recycled.

You can compost just about anything that grew at one time, that includes cloth and paper.

Glass, most plastics, paper, any kind of metal, wood or cloth.

Furniture, carpet, most building supplies including concrete.
