I would first recomend getting can crushers and saving all the cans at school. Then, when you get a bunch bring them to your local scrap yard and they will but them from cash!

2nd, there is a new product being made by americans called papercrete.

you can make some at school and build stuff with it or build products and sell them back to the public. Papercrete is very interesting and it is all over the web. Do a search on youtube for it. It is very cool.

Plastic is very difficult to recycle and generate monies. In order to do so you will need a plastic bottle shredder. you can find them online but they only have big ones that are very expensive.

If your city doesn't recycle. Might I suggest tapping into the art program to make sculptures with waste:

As an environmental scientist and a sustainabilitist I always try to find direct sales or use. It is very important that we do so and treat recycling as a resource for the community.

I would also suggest you contact you city's department of public works for more info, but please try and find uses for the stuff on site and direct sales.

  12. Hello,

Egg cartons can be used in compost and to grow bean sprouts with cotton wool. When I was a kid we also used egg cartons as paint pots instead of buying plastic trays.  If you know anyone with a few chickens, they will also be gratefull for containers to put eggs in.  You might even get a few complimentary ones yourself.

Water bottles - use them again and again &again.  Scottish water is great.  Well it is in Perthshire anyway.  You can also use them cut in half as a funnel is they are plastic.  I had one in an unusual shape that was made of glass and I turned it into a vase for a single flower.  IT was very attractive.  She loved it.

Jars - I save them up for a friend who makes lots of jam.  They can also be used as paint pots and for growing seedlings in.

When I was a kid we used to use the left over toilet rolls and rolls that you keep cling film and foil on to make puppets.

What about saving water? In Australia, they save the bath or shower water and use it to water the garden or to wash the cars.  They wouldn't consider leaving a tap running.  Some people only flush the toilet when there is only solid waste.

We should recycle because it uses up less worldy resources and it puts less of a strain on our environment.  We are going to be running out of landfill in a few years time (sorry don't have statistics) - that's why people are starting to have to pay to dump their rubbish.  In an effort to get people recycling again.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

  13. umm... if we dont start soon global warming well happen then after that there well be another ice age. also try to find a video online download it onto a cd and show it to the class. you could also brieng in trash and show them how to sort the recyclbels... hope this helps

  14. I use the cardboard egg cartons (not styrofoam!) for seed plantings.  I put some potting soil in each little cup, add the seed, and water.  When the seedling is large enought to transplant into the garden I cut up the egg carton and plant each cup in the ground.  It biodegrades!

  15. we are all going to die because of people like you...please start recycling...
