Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner believes new regulations will help ‘smarter drivers’ in 2011
Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner recently stated that the new technical changes made to the regulations of Formula 1 will test the drivers’ intelligence and the ‘smarter drivers’ will use these new regulations advantageously in the 2011 season.
Two of the major changes in the regulations are the reintroduction of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and moving rear wings.
“The drivers adapt incredibly quickly, anything that gives them performance they are on to immediately, so KERS and the rear wing they have mastered very quickly. For sure there is a lot more going on this year and the most intelligent driver will come to
the front,” Horner told the media.
KERS is a device that converts heat energy into kinetic energy and stores it which the driver can use later in order to give his car a sort of a power boost.
A movable rear wing on the other hand is a device that increases or decreases the downforce generated by the rear wing of the car during a race.
Other than that, the introduction of the new tyre compounds by the new lone tyre suppliers, Pirelli, is another major change in the management of the sport. It is believed that the new tyres wear out faster than the Bridgestones of 2010 and as a result,
the drivers will have to opt for 2-4 pit stops per race.
However, Red Bull did not make any changes in its drivers’ line-up for the 2011 Formula 1 season. Mark Webber and the 2010 Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel will be back once again despite the personal differences they have had since the 2010 Formula
1 season.
“I'm sure they are going to push each other hard and they'll get the best out of each other. It makes for one of the most exciting line-ups in Formula One, but hopefully incidents like Istanbul we'll manage to avoid,” said Christian.
The relationship between the two drivers deteriorated mainly because of the incident during the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix when Sebastian Vettel made an overtaking manoeuvre on Mark Webber and failed as a result of which, Mark lost his lead and Sebastian had
to retire.
Nevertheless, the two drivers have vowed to put their differences aside and work as a team once again and it would be interesting to see how they compete against each other in the 2011 Formula 1 season as it is expected that both of the Red Bull drivers
are going to be the top running drivers of the upcoming season.
